# Managed databases

> PostgreSQL you do not have to run.

1. In **cloud.dashfordevs.com → Databases**, choose **Create database**.

2. Name it, pick PostgreSQL's version, choose **shared** or **dedicated**, and optionally a project.

3. Wait for **Ready** (a shared database takes seconds).

4. Attach it to an app, or open **Connection details** to see the host, port, database, user and password.

## How credentials are kept

- The password is **not stored in our database**. It lives in a secrets vault and is read only when a member with permission asks for the connection details; that request is recorded.
- Databases accept connections only from trusted sources: the apps you attach them to, inside the private network.

## Shared and dedicated

A **shared** database is your own database and login on a tenant Postgres server shared with other customers' databases (never with the DashForDevs platform's own data). It is the cheapest way to start, and it is **never HIPAA**.

A **dedicated** database is its own server with its own encryption key, and is HIPAA eligible.
